Spann, Jack: Time, Time, Time, Time, Time

Some albums take time, time, time, time, time to work their way into your head and heart. I've been listening to the debut album, Time, Time, Time, Time, Time from Midwestern multi-instrumentalist Jack Spann for days, and I treasure it more with every spin.

While Spann plays guitar and bass on these percussion-free songs, his dramatic piano skills dominate. Add in a slightly nasally vocal delivery, and you've got a timeless sound that recalls early Joe Jackson ("If I'm Ever in Love"), Billy Joel ("Songman") and Ben Folds ("Beautiful Day"). Charming melodies and clever wordplay propel these songs that are simultaneously laced with cynicism and joy. You won't even miss the drums.

Credit also should go to vocalist Molly Mastrangelo, who sings lead with Spann on "Games," one of the album's finest songs. And let's not forget producer Gary Tanin (Daryl Stuermer, Roger Powell), who also plays additional keyboards on all but one of these 10 songs and makes Spann's musical versatility shine. Pop, rock, indie, alternative or even piano prog — whatever you call this music, Time, Time, Time, Time, Time is worth your time.
