Blood Red Saints: Speedway

Circumstances have made this review a bit late. For that I apologize as Speedway would have definitely made an impression on my top albums of 2015.

Blood Red Saints was formed at the end of 2014 by singer Pete Godfrey and bassist Rob Naylor. Godfrey made his recording debut with the short lived In Faith album in October 2014, but eager to be in a band rather than a project, he made his excuses and formed Blood Red Saints, named after a 1920s New York speedway team. Blood Red Saints lineup is completed by another former In Faith member, Pete Newdeck (former Eden's Curse drummer and currently the vocalist for Tainted Nation) on drums and Lee Revill on guitar (Gary Hughes). Lost Weekend's Irvin Parratt has recent joined on keyboards whilst Vega's James Martin has also played a key part in getting the band to where they are today as he was instrumental in getting the band signed to Frontiers and – together with his twin brother Tom, he also co-wrote two songs on the album. Harry Hess from Harem Scarem took care of the mastering of the album.

There is quality oozing through Speedway especially on the highly FM-like "Unbreakable" which is a highlight of the latter end of the album. That said, it is consistently good from start to finish - a real slab of quality English melodic rock other than the opening "Kickin' Up Dust" which is a touch too generic for my tastes but even taking that into account there is much to love here – want proof? Take a listen to the wonderfully melodic "Wrapped Up in These Arms" and be transported back to a simpler, less cluttered time. I do feel like FM are a very comparable act given that "Feels A Lot Like Love" could have come straight from Indiscreet. Yes, some of the lyrics are kind of clichéd (ship of fools and rollercoaster ride both make an appearance)but Speedway is a fine debut album and I look forward to seeing the band live with Romeo's Daughter later in the year.
