Doug Wahlberg Band: Flying Under The Radar

Doug Wahlberg has been touring the States for a number of years now bringing his brand of classic rock to the masses. He has toured with heavy hitters like Foreigner, Cheap Trick, Paul Simon and Blue Oyster Cult and has recently released his new disc Flying Under The Radar.

Wahlberg has an excellent voice and his classy guitar playing is all over these eight tracks. Whether a well-placed solo, catchy riff or melodic acoustic guitar, his distinct stamp is here in spades. His band is just as good, all professional players adding the necessary ingredients to flesh out the sound. The best part is Wahlberg doesn't feel the need to showboat. His guitar is definitely present but never at the expense of the melody. His solos are always classy and fit every song like a glove. Songs like the incredibly catchy and upbeat "Can't Wait" and the somewhat darker "The Lake" are first class rock tunes. Other winners include the album opening "Love When It Rains" with its muted intro of vocals, guitar and keys, the more plaintive 'Broken" with its classic combination of acoustic and electric guitar and the acoustically driven ballad "Nothing" with more catchy riffs and lovely keyboard orchestrations that are beautifully restrained never overwhelming the core of the song.

My only complaint is the album's brevity at only thirty-two minutes. Very short by today's standards. Still, you will find no filler songs, just eight classic rock songs mixing up-tempo rockers and ballads to good effect.

Flying Under The Radar is a very enjoyable disc of tasty classic rock songs from a first class band. Wahlberg's understated showmanship is like a breath of fresh air. Highly recommended.
