Gehennah: Too Loud to Live, Too Drunk to Die

In the wake of the death of Motorhead legend Lemmy, there's obviously going to be a void for that brand of thrashy, dirty, punk infused metal now that that band will no longer exist. Well, perhaps not. Popping up with their debut for Metal Blade Records, and fourth release overall, is Gehennah, a four piece consisting of Mr. Violence (vocals), Rob Stringburner (guitar), Hellcop (drums), and Charley Knuckleduster (bass). As ridiculous as their stage names are, these guys are as serious as a heart attack when it comes to delivering Motorhead/Venom inspired metal. This is sweaty, booze drenched, raunchy speed metal/black 'n' roll/punk styled stuff here, catchy from the get-go, raw, and in your face, with tunes like "Still the Elite", "Life Metal Must Die", "Scumbag" and the raucous title track busting out of the gate with memorable yet ragged choruses, filthy guitar riffs, and just an overall vibe that will be familiar to any metalhead. "Let's Fall off the Wagon" is such a throwback to Ace of Spades era Motorhead that the aura of Lemmy, Animal, and Fast Eddie just seems to loom in the background, while the Lemmy-meets-Cronos styled vocals of " 'Cause We're a Street Metal Band" are a perfect fit for this raging metal/blues/punk corker. "When All Else Fails-Destroy!" is another fun, tough as nails heavy rocker that speeds along mercilessly, and its sibling "Low on Cash, High on Speed" does the same with some manic rhythms and filthy, jagged guitar riffs.

Though Too Loud to Live, Too Drunk to Die perhaps has a few too many tracks (some of these are just way too similar to each other), most of the songs fall within the 2-3 minute range so the album flows pretty quickly. For those who are going to have a hard time without new Motorhead music every couple of years, Gehennah have just enough of a familiar sound to perhaps fill that void. Fun stuff for sure here, so make sure to check this one out.
