Bloor, Reg: Theme From An Imaginary Slasher

I'm all for supporting the underground music scene so I was intrigued to hear the debut album by avant-garde guitarist Reg Bloor who has worked with artists such as David Bowie, contributed to movie soundtracks and has collaborated with avant-garde composer Glenn Branca (who is also her husband), the last fifteen years.

There is no doubting Bloor is doing something outside the proverbial box but I have to say I had a hard time with this release. The atonal discord and chaotic guitar exploits did not sound pleasurable to these ears. Grating on my nerves was more like it as the overall sound is incredibly harsh and off kilter. So much so it comes off as noise rather than music as the melodies are non-existent which I am sure was the artist's intent. Worse yet, the repetitive nature of some of the pieces didn't help.

Sorry for being so negative but I have to be honest. Perhaps if there were other instruments besides the programmed drums I would be more open to this release. While some of the songs are more structured than others it still wasn't enough to pull me in. One of the songs is called "Unstrumental". After hearing it I know why. As it stands, Theme From An Imaginary Slasher earns 1.5 stars.
