Degradead: Degradead

Commemorating their 15th anniversary, Swedish Melodic Death Metaller's Degradead, have released their 5th album simply titled Degradead. This self titled record is brutal and menacing with melodies that pull you in. Fans of In Flames and Scar Symmetry will especially gravitate towards Degradead's Melodo-Metal.

Starting from the word go, this 5th release is off to the races with the lead track, "Afterlife". With double kick drums a-blazing and machine gun guitars, the pace is set for a breakneck ride. Throw in some nice melodic vocals in the chorus to go along with the throat shredding vocals in the verses and "Afterlife" is a great appetizer. "Victimize" keeps the pedal down with more furiosity and a heavy as hell groove. The melodic angle is an important ingredient to what makes Degradead so tasty and it does not take anything away from the bands heavy handed, ranting ways. Songs feature great musicianship with some high octane guitar playing that fuels the fire along with tight, groove laden beats with the occasional blast beat.

Ranging from all out Thrash to Death-like Metal, Degradead's self titled album has the modern day Metal landscape covered right across the board and their mixture of clean and scream vocals blends well with their ultimate use of melody within their Metal chants. This 11 track record is a good find in the early part of 2016.

Degradead: Degradead

My Score:

Pretty catchy stuff here, as the Swedish melodic death metal act Degradead once again have crafted a collection of memorable, hook laden extreme metal tailor made for any fan of Sonic Syndicate, In Flames, Scar Symmetry, Mercenary, Mnemic, and Dark Tranquility. Raging growls battle it out with soaring melodic clean vocals on "Afterlife", while the more death metal side of their music takes center stage of plows ahead full force on the maniacal, raging "Victimize". Throughout the rest of this self-title release, you'll get plenty of that back and forth between their extreme side and their more melodic nature, which works to the bands advantage; take "A New Dawn" for example, an atmospheric rocker with more than a fair share of alluring hooks but also enough ferocity to draw in the crowds that just love it brutal. Of course, if you just love it brutal, you have "Morphosis", "The Blinding Crusade", and "The Extinction", each one chock full of venomous screams, lethal guitar riffs and pounding rhythms.

Good stuff overall from this veteran act, and while I wouldn't call Degradead the most original album you'll hear this year, it's certainly enjoyable and memorable melodic extreme metal that's better than a lot of what crosses our review desk. Out now on Metalville Records.
