Cannon, Colin: Intermission (Farewell)

Here we have the third album from New York guitarist/composer Colin Cannon, titled Intermission (Farewell). With 14 tracks spread out between three parts, Intermission (Farewell) features more than 20 musicians & vocalists, many different styles, shapes, and flavors, such as jazz, classical, ambient, rock, and funk. With this album, Cannon puts the closing touches on the Colin Cannon Quartet and expands it to something of a much larger scope. In addition to the Cannon's electric & acoustic guitars, synths, and vocals, you also have Manami Morita (keyboards), Zak Croxall (bass), Thomas Hartman (drums), and a wide assortment of other folks tackling vocals, violin, trumpet, cello, viola, sax, clarinet, and vibraphone.

The music at times is sweeping, grand, majestic, and beautiful, as on the lovely "Everyday" or the soaring vocal a cappella meets lush acoustic arrangement of "La Da". In other spots, the ensemble dives into bubbling space rock ( "Mofo"), tasty jazz-rock "Still Breathing" and "Farewell"), as well as a dreamy pop/world/jazz hybrid which can be heard on the closing "Recollections" suite. Through it all, the musicians act as one solid unit, and there are no real standout spots here other than the occasional guitar flourish from Cannon or a quick sax, piano, synth, or trumpet burst in spots. Think of some of the 'large band' Pat Metheny line-ups and you will get a feel for what to expect here. Various audio samples from 1950s TV, and radio are sprinkled throughout the tracks as well.

Nice stuff all around, Intermission (Farewell) has many warm, inviting moments that thread many different styles and genres, making for a pleasing listen for anyone into soothing, intelligent soundscapes.
