Conan: Revengeance

Conan is one of my favorite Doom metal bands; their last album, Blood Eagle, was my number one pick of 2014 and I still find myself blown away by the heaviness and drama of the opening track "Crown of Talons." Given my love for the last album, I was worried that I set my expectations too high and that this new release would seem like nothing special. I shouldn't worry. Conan is the kind of band that knows exactly what it is—a band soaked in the blood of old-school movies, stuff like Krull and Beastmaster and Conan the Barbarian. Added to that are the seemingly endless number of Dungeons and Dragons-style video games that let us wander through forests, temples, and caverns in search of glory and treasure. To be sure, Conan plays to those old school interests knowingly, but this isn't goofy stuff, a silly exercise in nostalgia or camp. Instead, this is the soundtrack of the movies that should have been made, the ones that depict epic battles with accuracy, knowing that the stakes are high and that things really do hang in the balance. Where other bands, Manowar for instance, blend irony and camp with heaviness, Conan is all heaviness. Sure, some people might dismiss all that fantasy stuff as goofy, but it's potential to be nothing less than the stuff of heavy metal is always on display here. And that's what Conan does so well. The guys simply create crushing and powerful doom metal that is consistently fresh, exciting, and passionate. Check out "Thunderhoof" and "Wrath Guantlet" but please don't stop there. Your journey awaits.
