Mammoth Storm: Fornjot
The closing track on this new release—a thirteen minute doom metal masterpiece—is enough to recommend this album to anyone. Entitled "Hekla," the track connects all the elements of this album into a track filled with the force and drive of marching legion of mammoths. A blend of Gothic and Doom metal, the music here moves forward at a slow tempo, but one that is routinely crushing and powerful, moody and dark. Blending heavy riffs with patient and even tremolo picking, the guitars lead the way across the bleak musical landscape. But the music isn't all a crushing and driving force. Instead, the music might be compared to a long journey where the doomier riffs drive the travelers forward and the calmer moments suggest moments of rest and recreation. However we could describe it, the music here suits the setting suggested by the album's cover—dark, snowy, epic, and mysterious. The vocals, performed by Daniel Arvidsson (best known as the guitarist for Draconian) are rough and strong, but mixed evenly with the crushing power of the guitars, bass, and drums. Fans of this style should definitely check out the opening track "Augurs Echo" as well as the aforementioned "Hekla." I was also impressed with "Horns of Jura," another long and meaty doom metal offering. Broad in scope and superb in execution, this debut album by Mammoth Storm is well worth a careful listen.
