Rhapsody of Fire: Into the Legend

Rhapsody of Fire are, in many ways somewhat difficult to review. They are arguably the ultimate Marmite band. It's very difficult to be ambivalent about them given their uniquely bombastic OTT, cinematic style – even though erstwhile guitarist Luca Turilli now fronts his own version of Rhapsody (of Fire.)One either likes and therefore "gets" them of one absolutely does not. Into the Legend won't change this one iota. Even the press notes for the album are bombastic, "another legendary and possibly THE most legendary masterpiece this forceful band has ever produced," is how AFM Records describe it.

Main composer Alex Staropoli (keyboards) certainly has the knack for penning a memorable memory, the title track for example has been buzzing around my brain for days now. Not that Rhapsody of Fire can't rock out with the best of 'em – witness the scuzzy guitars at the beginning of "Winter's Rain" which is a much darker side of the band who as ever, are led by the powerful vocals of Fabio Lione who delivers a masterful performance on this song in particular.

It's entirely possible that Rhapsody in any incarnation may never write a song as utterly brilliant and bonkers as "Emerald Sword" or as crazily genius as "Village of Dwarves" but they have a bloody good go on "A Voice In The Cold Wind" which is my favourite track on offer. All the classic Rhapsody of Fire traits are in place: huge choirs, operatic vocals, neo-classical guitar breaks, and orchestral sections etc., all of which suggest that the band continue to plough their niche regardless and whilst new fans may not flock towards shops/online retailers, long term fans will be more than satisfied.
