Pil and Bue: Forget the Past, Let's Worry About the Future

Pil and Bue (Norwegian for Bow and Arrow) wastes no time grabbing listeners with music that is catchy, crunchy, and poppy. Though made up of two members, one on drums and percussion and the other on vocals and baritone guitar, the band never sounds small or minimal. Instead, the dynamic percussion and the fuzz-soaked guitar push everything forward so well and the music they perform is so appealing that few listeners will ask for much more. The band's secret is its undeniable energy; from start to finish, it never lets up and never gets boring. The drums are especially engaging. They fill everything out, finding beats in all the right places. The vocals are just as dynamic. They range from loud and raucous to soft and yearning. "Fear Flee Freeze Fight" even has a section where Petter Carlsen's voice soars to near-falsetto heights. Listening to this album over the last few days, I find myself enjoying it more and more. I think some listeners will prefer something heavier, as though the poppy song structures, no matter how catchy, are never good enough. But this band is just too much fun to care about such objections. Better still, the lyrics on this album are anything but conventional. Instead of trite love songs or songs about partying, things turn to the women's rights and other forms of injustice. The result is a fun and provocative listen. This band hits the road with El Caco, a perfect pairing, early this year. Check them out!
