Vulcano: Bloody Vengeance (remastered/reissue)

Somewhat of an underground extreme metal classic for decades, the 1986 release from Brazil's Vulcano, titled Bloody Vengeance, has now been reissued in a glorious 6-panel digipack, containing not only the original album remastered, but also a bonus DVD featuring a live concert from that same year, taped in Brazil. Pre-dating both Sepultura and Sarcofago, Vulcano practically opened up South America to the idea of the early extreme metal sound, delivering a style that was part thrash as well as part what we now come to call blackened death metal. It's easy to assume, listening to Bloody Vengeance after all these years, that Vulcano influenced many more bands than just their Brazilian brethren.

Despite the remaster, Bloody Vengeance is still a harsh sounding, muddy, and raw album, but again, this was 1986 and obviously recorded with a meager budget, so the production certainly suffered. But, it doesn't hold back the power & fury that's contained within these 8 raging tunes. "Death Metal" and "Dominios of Death" kick some serious ass, Angel's evil growls & screams plowing through pummeling rhythms and frantic riffing courtesy of the late Soto Jr. and Flavio. The absolutely monolithic title track is probably one of the heaviest and most extreme songs recorded in 1986, a bruising example of monstrous riffs, Lemmy influenced screams, and pulverizing rhythms. As if having this album reissued wasn't enough, Greyhaze Records have included a bonus DVD with a live show from Brazil in 1986. It's rough and raw, but man, you get to see the band in all their glory, complete with leather, spikes, and studs, delivering a punishing set in front of a rabid audience. Is it somewhat dated looking and sounding? Yes, of course, but for those metalheads who grew up during the birth of the extreme metal scene, this show will be a revelation.

Short and to the point, Bloody Vengeance knocks you in the teeth, crushes the top of your skull, and then gets out of dodge to let you toil in your own misery. Fans of early Slayer, Kreator, Venom, Hellhammer, Motorhead, Possessed, Bulldozer, and Death, who perhaps missed this album back in the day, need to make sure they get acquainted with it now thanks to this great reissue.
