Here we have some technical death metal from Italy in the form of Synapses and their new CD Devoutness, out now on Cimmerian Shade Recordings. Comprised of Alessio Fassoli (guitars), Riccardo Fanara (drums), Giovanni Canedoli (vocals), and Giordano Savoldi (bass), Synapses have been around since 2008, and Devoutness is their second official release, with 10 crushing examples of modern brutal & technical death metal bookended by two short instrumental tracks. There are definitely some solid tracks here, such as the monstrous "Spiral of Devoutness", the massive crunch & blast beat frenzy of "Force-Fed with Gore", the hyper groove within "A Place Will Be Forgotten", the Meshuggah-meets-Cannibal Corpse of "Phoenix Condemned", and the relentless "Sacrilegious". Through it all, the riffs are huge, the bass explosive, lead work complex, drums non-stop, and the growls bellow and howl with venomous intent. If there is one complaint here, it's that there are a bit too many tunes, and a few of them follow a similar path giving parts of Devoutness a certain 'sameyness' feel. Otherwise though, this is solid modern death metal with a technical edge and plenty of groove.
