'This is Death Metal Warfare!'
The Wake of Ares is the debut album from German/Austrian death metal act Infected Chaos, who are comprised of Christian Fischer (vocals), Martin Hartmann (guitar), Matthias Mayr (guitar), Florian Betz (bass), and Christoph Raggl (drums). Eleven songs with a loose theme dealing with 'suppression, slavery, gaining strength and revolting against the tyrants', The Wake of Ares is decidedly old school, with Infected Chaos clearly influenced by the likes of Dismember, God Dethroned, Grave, and the like, so be prepared for a brutally good time.
Fischer has a booming roar, the perfect complement to the crushing riffage and jackhammer blasts of tracks like "Wolves in the Pantheon", "Devours the Light", and the pulverizing "Ninth Circle". "Code of I.C." has a very cool, old school death metal vibe, so much so that you'd swear it was something that came out of the early '90s scene, and "IA, God of War", just, well, crushes from start to finish. Any extreme metal fan will find it hard to resist a song title like "The Silent Monoliths of Grandeur" (and the music lives up to the title!), while "Bloodawn Resistance" is as punishing as it gets, with a great groove to go along with pulverizing riffs and inhuman growls. Overall, The Wake of Ares is a solid, no nonsense, no fills homage to old school death metal, and signals the arrival of Infected Chaos, a band that deserves your immediate attention, and one who appears to have a bright future ahead of them.
