Danter, Ian: Second Time Around

It would seem to be an unusual combination, being a host for a Sports Talk radio show and a musician, but that is exactly what we have with Ian Danter and his new album Second Time Around, the follow up to his debut Prove You Wrong released in 2013. Danter also plays drums in the Kiss cover band Dressed To Kill.

On the album Danter plays everything himself which can often be to the detriment of the music. I really cannot fault that here. The music is well played with catchy hooks and vocals throughout and although you won't hear virtuosic performances, this is pop rock music after all, it comes across as a professional sounding production which is a huge plus. The individual songs don't necessarily stand out from one another as there were no jaw dropping moments for me but that doesn't mean I don't like the album, in fact, I quite like it for what it is. All the songs contain catchy guitar riffs and Danter's smoothly melodic vocals. Some of the tracks have an '80s Alice Cooper feel such as "Love Fatigue" and "Mr. Poison" whereas others play more towards bands like Kiss and Def Leppard. The hair metal anthem "It All Comes Back To Rock" will have fans of the genre hitting the repeat button while simultaneously wishing for the days of yore and digging out their favourite Def Leppard album.

Two of my favourites are the balladic title track with soaring lead guitar and the Beatles/Squeeze influenced "We Believed" with its lush background orchestrations and backing vocals.

Second Time Around is a nice little pop rock album hearkening back to the sounds of the '70s and '80s. Its pure ear candy and just a whole lot of fun to listen to.
