Electric Woodland – Electric Woodland
Instead of whining that there were no good gigs to go to in their home country of Norway, the five guys in Electric Woodland decided to form their own band and rectify the situation by themselves! The result is this debut four track EP which blends the blues of early ZZ Top, with the sharpness of something more akin to Them Crooked Vultures.
In truth it is a slightly uneven journey through these four songs, but on the whole Electric Woodland have shown a great deal of promise here. "Midnight Treasure" sets the band's blues based stall out with a lazy, but catchy riff and vocalist Vegard Ertsaas convinces with his bourbon soaked drawl. "Sharp Angle" doesn't quite live up to its name, but the dirty, almost speeded up stoner vibe is still pretty decent, before the too maudlin "Another Brick In Your Puzzle" over stays its welcome, even if it is only three minutes long! Things perk up again on the closing "Manimal", which shows a lighter side to the band, although this time the lyrics are slightly cumbersome. So not a stunner, but still a thoroughly enjoyable introduction to a band showing the beginnings of some talent that may well see them make an impact with their full length debut.
