Pinkish Black: Bottom of the Morning

This album appeared right around the time that the second release by The Great Tyrant dropped. Both releases should probably be experienced around the same time since the bands are so deeply connected. Unfortunately, the bass player from The Great Tyrant died unexpectedly and The Great Tyrant called it quits just when it was gaining a cult following. Even though I didn't like the latest from The Great Tyrant, I do enjoy Pinkish Black much more.

I approached this album in the way I might enjoy an album either by Zombi or by John Carpenter. The music isn't quite as formed around a 80s-style horror movie sound track vibe, but it isn't far off. I was especially interested in the opening of "Brown Rainbow," the way the keyboard announced a kind of stately Gothic mood to the whole thing. For me, that opening proved a fun and memorable way to kick things off on an album largely devoted to dark themes concerning death, destruction, chaos, and sadness. "I'm All Gone" was another dark and gloomy track that stood out; so was "Everything Must Go," a track that I found deeply sad. This band trades on the darkness of the world, creating musical pictures of life without much to hope for. The result is often melancholy, but Pinkish Black does a good job of keeping listeners riveted to the power of the music. Pinkish Black retains much of the experimental qualities of The Great Tyrant, but the music is more accessible, more lush, and more enjoyable.
