Ram: Svbversvm

The Swedish influence on the Metal world continues to grow by the minute and in every conceivable Metal genre. Formed back in 1999, the Swedish band Ram, has taken a step backwards in time to the early 80's with a more traditional Metal approach in the vain of Mercyful Fate meets the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. 2015 sees the release of Ram's 4th full length album, Svbversvm, that contains 10 original tracks that has those Old School Metal overtones mixed with darkness.

Svbversvm begins with the dissonant sounding riffing of "Return of the Iron Tyrant" that conjures to mind another Swedish stalwart, namely the ghouls named Ghost. Double bass pounding pushes this track along with some nice twin guitar harmonizing, while the screeching vocals delivered by Oscar Carlquist, fall inbetween a Rob Halford scream and the uniqueness of a Eric Wagner of the Chicago Doom legends, Trouble, helps to root this release firmly in the Metal of yesteryear.

Production is quite period perfect, not sounding too polished or "modern" giving Svbversvm a more authentic sound for the Metal that they produce, it's noisy, heavy and loud. Other standout tracks are "The Omega Device (MI III), the breakneck fury of "Eyes of the Night" and eery power of the riff heavy instrumental, "Temples of Void". If you are a fan of the stylings of Metal in the NWOBHM genre, then Ram might just satisfy your sweet tooth.
