Larsson, Lalle: Until Never

Swedish keyboardist/composer Lalle Larsson released his sixth studio album Until Never in 2014. This is a completely different beast than his previous effort Nightscapes as Larsson has pushed aside the progressive fusion and heavy prog leanings of that album in favour of a minimalistic approach. Even the cover, a night image of a dark iron bridge in stark contrast to an illuminated building gives a feeling of wistful melancholy.

On the album are Larsson (piano, keyboards), Jonas Reingold (fretless bass) and Richard Hallebeek (acoustic guitar).

On the album Larsson and his two bandmates explore a very subtle and refined style with the piano providing the core of these nine minimalistic tunes. The melodies are somewhat sad and forlorn, often suggesting a longing remembrance or a fleeting glimpse of a long lost love. Larsson's piano lines are accompanied by gently played acoustic guitar and Reingold's smooth bass sliding in and out of the soundscape.

The first two tracks "Leaving Paris" and "The Solitary Traveler" give a taste of what you can expect here. Wistful melodies, subtly stark arrangements and thoughtful playing from all involved.

Perhaps the prettiest tunes are the somewhat jazzy "Last Call" and the wispy "September Suite" where the bass and classical style guitar are things of beauty.

Until Never is really quite a beautiful record and I applaud Larsson for his earnest and heartfelt melodies. Yes it is a vast turnaround from his previous works with Agents of Mercy and Karmakanic and although he didn't take my breath away and dazzle me like he has done in the past, there is no denying its charm and beauty.

Released on Reingold Records.
