Lawrence's Creation: Drop Zone

If you like your music heavy and dense you will probably want to give this one a try. The band is Lawrence's Creation consisting of Black Metal gurus Lawrence Wallace (guitar, synth, drum programming) and Finnish/American musician Mika Mage (bass). Depending on your familiarity with metal you may have heard of these artists in their other bands. Both are members of Nihilistinen Barbaarisuus while Wallace is/was also in Shadows in the Crypt and Serpent ov Old who have since disbanded.

Although both artists have links to Black Metal the music on Drop Zone is densely layered progressive metal with the occasional element of heavy space rock incorporated into the mix. Wallace plays fast and heavy throughout and he certainly has the chops to keep up with the likes of Satriani and Malmsteen. Lightning fast shred fests and heavy riffs augmented with swirling synths and Mage's bass, although at times is lost in the mix, is what this music is all about. The layers drip with intensity and the pace is often fast and furious. It's a very good album although the barrage of intensity and slightly compressed production may take some time to get used to. My one recommendation would be to incorporate more atmospheric textures into the heaviness so as not to put all their eggs in one basket so to speak. "A Thousand Words" does do a nice job of incorporating moodier elements.

That said, this is still a very enjoyable slice of heavy instrumental music that should have progressive metal fans and guitar players alike chomping at the bit.

Released on Horror Pain Gore Death Productions.
