Hailing from the outskirts Oslo, Norway, comes a terrific Progressive Ambient Metal band called Delvoid. The band creates a thick mass of sound that incorporates beautiful, if not sedate vocals, big spacey chording with a minimalist ideal and attention to detail.
Serene is Delvoid's sophomore full release and the word psychedelic instantly jumps out at me to describe their fare. While Delvoid are not psychedelic in the '60's LSD sense, their vast ambient venture into the spatial boundaries of the stratosphere is more inline to what I hear in these guys. That musical exploration coupled with clean and emotive vocals by Alexander Michael Delver, remind me of the styling's of Ian Kenny of the fantastic Karnivool or even the more tranquil side of Maynard of Tool. Delvoid's songs create dark and eerie imagery that the atmospheric doodling brings out and they put thoughts of many a horror movies' of depiction of claustrophobia into one's psyche, while also creating that yearning and melancholy feeling that can be quite beautiful in a delightfully somber sort of way.
Delvoid are at their sunless best with their long compositions, their ability to draw out the anticipation and emotion within every song is brilliant. Delvoid's use of unending building of tension makes for quite a passionate journey throughout this 75 minute gem that is Serene. This is art in its purest form.
