Our Oceans: Our Oceans

This album came about, in part, through a successful crowd-funding campaign. Even though I've never actively participated in one of those funding projects, I understand that they function on a promise of work to come, that they trade on anxious enthusiasm rather than on something already completed. In the case of Our Oceans, this probably means that several fans were hoping to hear this album and have been looking forward to the results. Given that the band is made up of musicians from some well-known bands (Exivious, Cynic, Dodecahedron, and Ulsect) there may have been some interest in what these guys were doing with a new project.

The music here is more suited for a clean and well-lit coffee shop than a dark and loud bar. Fans of the bands listed above won't find much to remind them of the extreme sounds of a band like Dodecahedron. More singer / songwriter oriented than extreme, the music here creates lush, lyrical, and dream-like atmospheres. Even though I admired these qualities in the album, I was not as engaged with it as I might have been. I have nothing against an album of mellow songs, but by the time I finished listening to this album (twice!), I was ready for a change of pace.
