Hexthrower: Mythos Tragoedia

If the awesome Frank Frazetta cover art wasn't enough, it's ultimately the vintage sounding heavy blues rock/proto-metal music seeping throughout the pores of Mythos Tragoedia that's going to pull any fan of classic hard rock into the world of Hexthrower. Led by guitarists/vocalist Rahne Pistor, Hexthrower blast away with a style that incorporates legendary acts such as Cream, Cactus, Mountain, Captain Beyond, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Oak Arkansas, Sir Lord Baltimore, Hawkwind, and Iron Butterfly, so expect a wealth of fuzzy riffs, bluesy lead guitar solos, stompin' grooves, and loads of booze soaked hooks. "Hexthrower" and "Shadows" rock hard with plenty of menace, and the upbeat, bluesy monster "Hyena" is a safe bet for any fan of classic US act Cactus. "Forever is Today" is one of the more metallic tracks, complete with some thunderous riffs and blazing solos, and both "Going Down Together" & "Triumph or Tragedy" veer almost into the doom camp with their slow, lumbering riffs. Favorite track though has to be "The Demons Inside", a dark, ominous heavy metal number that reminds at times of Danzig as well as Black Sabbath, while "Jump into the Flames" blends psychedelia with space rock and doom for a hauntingly good time.

Plenty of tasty sounds abound on Mythos Tragoedia for any fan of the early days of hard rock & metal. With the myriad of personnel on the album filling in vocal, drum, and bass duties, at times some of the tunes sound a bit disjointed and thrown together, not necessarily like 'a band', so it will be interesting to see going forward if Pistor can put together a stable line-up as clearly, the musical ideas are all there. Without a doubt a group to keep your eye on. Check out their bandcamp page through the link below to check out and purchase the album as well as soak in that wonderful Frazetta artwork!
