Lethal Steel: Legion of the Night

Legion of the Night is the debut record from Swedish Metal band, Lethal Steel, who harkens back to the Metal styling's of the late 70's or early 80's with their traditional sounding fare. Legion of the Night is an 8 song record that reminds one of the very early days of the NWOBHM movement where some bands flourished and others you never heard from again. This is the quandary that is Lethal Steel.

Their tunes are quite generic and unengaging with a hopeless simplicity that borders on the meandering and boring. The main issue are the vocals of Viktor Gustafsson, who turns in a performance that teeters on the annoying side. The vocal style is on the Operatic side but without the higher range and with a deeper delivery and overall I found the vocals to be quite lackluster, at best. Vocal harmonies are often multi-tracked during the choruses to add focus to these Operatic interludes which only draws more attention to this facet.

On the musical side of things, songs fall inbetween an unpolished and less attractive Blue Oyster Cult meets Mercyful Fate although I have a feeling the band listened more to Iron Maiden whereas they incorporate some gallop riffing and such. I found Legion of the Night to sound very outdated and the less than stellar production of the album certainly didn't help this cause. Overall, if you are a fan of the Underground Metal scene that was in the late 70's/early 80's, then Lethal Steel might be what you are looking for, if not steer clear.
