Graveworm: Engraved in Black

The always dependable Metal Mind Productions continues its run of limited editions, this time focusing on Graveworm and their fourth album Engraved in Black, originally released in 2003. This is the first I have heard of this heavy Italian band. Apparently this was somewhat of a transition from the previous release with Engraved in Black less symphonic and perhaps slightly heavier. To my ears this music is brimming with symphonic arrangements and the keyboards are used quite extensively but more for texture rather than a lead instrument. The metallic guitar riffs are laid down thick and heavy and give the band plenty of extra bite. The stark desolation of the cover, an abandoned church and accompanying graveyard symbolize the musical content found within, very intense to say the least. My problem with the album isn't with the music, however the vocals are another story. Stefan Fior's screaming style just doesn't do it for me. His growling is okay but I just wished the occasional clean vocal was thrown in to get a break form the intensity.

My favourite tracks are the instruments. "Thorns of Desolation" carries a marching drum beat over flute, whistle and bagpipes from guest musician Herman Kühebacher for a rich orchestral sound while "Apparition of Sorrow" is all grandiose drums and keyboards.

The strangest offering has to be a cover of REM's "Losing My Religion". While musically it's okay, the vocals are just too rough for my tastes.

With better vocals Engraved in Black could have easily been a four star album. As it stands, 2.5 stars will have to do.
