Kronos: Arisen New Era

The cover art for this release was created by Pierre Alain, an artist who has not only done several CD covers, but also plenty of work outside of music. Check out some of his work online. It's always visually striking and often depicts individuals in powerful states of conflict. There's often an epic feel to the work, including several pieces that seem to turn to the Classical past for inspiration. The cover to this one certainly depicts Poseidon alongside other figures, not to mention destructive forces coming not only from the sea but from the earth. Alain's website has a larger and more detailed version of the picture that's definitely worth checking out.

Kronos takes its name from the father of Zeus. Some of the songs on the album also make several references to Greek mythology. I'm not able to track them all, but I will say that it would be fun to connect the ancient stories to the music more directly. The music on this album is best described as unrelenting and aggressive death metal that regularly moves into the category of technical death metal. I especially enjoyed listening to the guitars on this album. They harmonize beautifully and play some very exciting lead passages. There's also a surprising moment at the end of "Aeons Titan Crown" where they turn in a short classical guitar run. I also have to mention the drums. In the grand tradition of technical death metal, they pound out the beats in ways that can only be described as inhuman. Better still, they never mistake endless pounding for drumming. Instead, the beats make their way relentlessly, intricately, and passionately. Recommended for fans of highly technical, intense, and brutal death metal (with a surprising twist of melody).
