Grey Skies Fallen: Earthwalker

This EP is available as a 7" on vinyl, but is also available for free as a digital download, a gift for fans of the band. For those who don't know Grey Skies Fallen, they produce an eclectic range of music that is often inspired by doom, but also does things with a range of other styles. Listeners will hear passages played on a synthesizer in addition to the usual mix of guitar, bass, and drums. Vocally, the band also shows a commitment to range. There are spots of clean and spots of raspy vocalizing. In my review of the band's last full-length, I mentioned that I hoped for something heavier from the band in the future. This EP gives me more of an opportunity to hear the band playing to their strengths as a doom act. "Earthwalker," the first side of the 7", has a heavier tone and pace and is equal parts doom metal and epic statement. I don't hear as much of the metalcore influence that I've heard in the past. The second track "Safe Passage" is made of slightly different material. Its pace is slower and its intent darker. Even though the vocals show more range on this track, the cleaner passages tend not to lift things out of the overall bleakness of mood. I liked "Earthwalker" better, but found that multiple listens to "Safe Passage" helped me uncover more of its depths.
