Penetrator: Unleash the Fury

The first three songs on Unleash the Fury, the debut CD from Canada's Penetrator, reveal little more than run-of-the-mill, old-school heavy-metal tendencies. Then an amazing thing happens on the fourth track: Penetrator becomes a better-than-average metal band that dares to combine the Doors with pre-Blackout Scorpions, Dio and quick bursts of modern-day power metal. "Muso in a Bottle" (which even sounds like a song title Jim Morrison would pen) is a creepy, groovy and memorable tune that makes the first 12 minutes of this CD sound like a different band. From there, Penetrator rips through five more songs – all clocking in at less than four minutes and most at less than three minutes. No ballads here, although it would be intriguing to hear how (or if) vocalist Maxel Black could inject some tenderness into his leather lungs. After all, he's already mastered Morrison, Klaus Meine and a half-dozen other influences. Unleash the Fury is a fast and furious album. Even though dropping the first three songs would have officially converted a short disc (32 minutes) into an EP, doing so would have given a more accurate sonic portrait of this promising band that proves the Great White North still knows how to rock.
