Total Negation is the musical project of a musician named Wiedergaenger. His music is dark and sad, but also somewhat vibrant. I was intrigued by the album's use of instruments such as the melodic and the vibraphone. The latter brought a much-needed layer of charm to things. It also has an oddly mysterious quality that I enjoyed. While the music was often engaging, I was not as involved with the vocals. They are performed with a rhythmic declaiming style, as though Wiedergaenger were talking instead of singing. I realize that this album actually does tell a story about "a contemporary witness who breaks under the pressure of controlling the life and death of others." I don't understand German, so I can't comment on the lyrics any more than that, but the story sounds like it could be interesting. Even so, I found the vocals somewhat distracting, especially at first. The music that backs up this story is largely drawn from black metal and doom metal. It was often good, but I found myself more interested in what the vibraphone was doing more than everything else. I had no idea how natural and how engaging the vibraphone could sound on a black metal album like this.
