Serial Butcher: Brute Force Lobotomy

Bands like this aren't known for subtlety or nuance. They don't sneak up on listeners or try to seduce them. Instead, they strike with all the force and power they can muster. The song titles alone give some indication of where this band is coming from. If we can agree they are all disgusting, I'm going to suggest that "Bowel Soup" is probably the worst of the bunch here. Fortunately, I'm not judging this album by its song titles—and neither should you. I think that many readers already know that all this disgust is not only deliberate, but also somewhat comical. Nevertheless, this is the kind of death metal that does not shy away from the painful, the abject, and the disgusting. Listening to it can be exhausting, but it is often so well done that it's hard not to enjoy much of it. Serial Butcher is especially good at making the guitars and drums sound good together. The leads and hooks are often amazing and are always backed up by beats that are not only relentless, but often complex. The bass guitars frequently fill in a space here and there to great effect. As for the vocals, so much will depend on whether you already like this style. It's rough and guttural and never apologizes.
