Keeping in line with the recent trend of veteran bands playing full classic albums, leave it to Southern Rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd to follow suit with a few special concerts at the famed Florida Theatre in their hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. Not one, but two mandatory Skynyrd albums are played in their entirety here, the debut and sophomore releases Pronouced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd & Second Helping, albums that many of the bands most beloved songs originated from. The line-up for this 2015 event was Gary Rossington (guitar), Johnny Van Zandt (lead vocals), Rickey Medlocke (guitar), Michael Cartellone (drums), Mark Matejka (guitar), Peter Keys (keyboards), Johnny Colt (bass), Dale Krantz Rossington (backing vocals), and Carol Chase (backing vocals), with some special guests rounding out the sound on additional horns & reeds.
Along with the essential songs that are always a part of any LS concert, such as "I Ain't the One", "Tuesday's Gone", "Gimme Three Steps", "Simple Man", "Free Bird", "Sweet Home Alabama", "Working For MCA", and "Call Me the Breeze", the real thrill here is watching the band churn out songs rarely, if ever, were played live, and there's a bunch of great ones on those first two albums. "Poison Whiskey", "Mississippi Kid", "Don't Ask No Questions", and "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" are handled perfectly by the band, each one given that royal Southern Rock touch so prevalent on the original recordings. "Swamp Music" and "The Needle and the Spoon" do rear their heads occasionally, and it's great to once again see the band play them alongside their siblings in the original album order. With the triple guitar attack of Rossington, Medlocke, and Matejka, the band is able to recreate all the six-string pyrotechnics in fine fashion, and up front and center is Johnny, as always doing his late brother Ronnie justice and having a blast in the process.
Say what you will about Lynyrd Skynyrd carrying on for so many years with only one original member left in Rossington, but the band still play these songs with love & conviction, and the crowds all over the world are still enjoying every minute of it. Seeing the band live numerous times in recent years, I can attest to the fact that they are still a powerhouse unit onstage, and this Eagle Rock Blu-ray adds more proof to their longstanding legacy. Great high definition video and stellar audio round out this 'must-have' release for any Skynyrd devotee.
