I imagine that Skindred may well be a new name to some readers, however, Benji Webbe and his troops have been around since 1998 plugging away with a succession of excellent albums such as 2002's Babylon, Union Black from 2011 and the more recent Kill the Power which troubled the UK's Top 40 album chart. Skindred have always mixed genres to interesting effect and Volume (on Napalm Records) continues that tradition admirably.
"Under Attack" is the ideal opening track for any Skindred album driven as it is by gargantuan riffs, pounding rhythms, Benji Webb's charismatic vocals and a catchier than you would expect chorus. Hang about that probably describes most of the record especially the wonderful title track. Skindred have always purveyed an exciting and intoxicating blend of screaming metal, reggae and Jamaican-stye dancehall and Volume changes little. If anything, as a whole, it may be slightly less immediate than previous efforts but as ever the band pack a powerful metaphorical, very-angry-at-times punch and this album should once again trouble the charts.
