Tormé, Bernie: Blackheart

Veteran axe-slinger Bernie Tormé sure as hell doesn't pull any punches on this latest effort Blackheart, as the former Gillan guitarist unleashes a dozen raunchy, testosterone filled rockers that are sure to please fans hungry for his ferocious brand of rock 'n' roll. Rounding out his power trio are bassist Chris Heilmann and drummer Ian Harris, and the three sound as if they just sat in a studio, cranked everything up to to 10 and let it rip.

Of course, Tormé has always been great at writing catchy, bluesy metal with a punk vibe, littered with wild guitar acrobatics, and that's no exception here on Blackheart. Tunes like "Better Days", "Golden Pig", and "1985 (Keeper of the Flame)" feature pounding rhythms, attitude soaked vocals, dirty riffs, and no shortage of screaming lead guitar solos. Torme wrangles his whammy bar like no other, so look for more ferocious, sizzling tremolo bursts on raging hard rockers "Pain Song" and "Snake in the Garden". It's not all about volume however, as "Miles to Babylon", "Flow", "Party's Over", and "Into the Sun" show a softer side to the guitarist, but for the most part Tormé cranks up the distortion and fires away, as on the blistering "Dirt" and the jacked up blooze metal of "Steady Roller Blues".

In the end, Blackheart is fun, guitar fueled hard rocking mayhem, and we've come to expect nothing less from this underrated guitar hero. Seek this one out, crack open a cold one, and turn it up LOUD!
