Legion of Andromeda: Iron Scorn
This is one of those albums that changes with each listen, but not for the reasons one might expect. Instead, of the usual layers of texture and timbre, this album weaves its way into the brain through a tedious and monotonous repetition of the basic rhythm. Yes, there are a few little changes here and there, but the beat of this album is essentially an unbroken pattern of quarter note beats from start to finish. The voices are dark and moody growls and grunts, noises that never rise to the level of leading vocal. I found them jarring, but they stay to the side of the action just enough that they ultimately join the rhythm in taking on a lulling and hypnotic quality. Surprisingly, everything blends together in ways that send the mind in different directions, as if the music were provoking contemplation rather than careful listening. As a doom / death metal album, this release is unconventional and unexpected. I didn't like it very much, but I found the overall idea intriguing and original.
