Designs of Chaos: The Darkest Storm

Like so much of human expression, this album has a strong connection to tragedy. The band's drummer, Chris Crammond, died suddenly and unexpectedly in an accident that left the band uncertain as to its future. This EP represents an attempt to bring the music to the public and to demonstrate the band's strength in the face of tragedy.

The music here certainly makes a good impression. I recently listened to the latest release by The Black Dahlia Murder and this EP reminds me of what that band has done over the years. The music here is more thrash than melodic death metal, but I think other listeners will hear the connection. The songs are strong, though mostly made up of the same kinds of sounds. For me, the band shows off its best side on "Strength in Numbers," the closing track. In that song, I hear the band's talents coalescing in impressive ways. The opening riff is strong and the guitar playing remains consistently impressive throughout. I especially liked the dual-guitar harmonies. I was also impressed with the overall sound of the drums. I assume this band is looking forward to the future and will plan for more music and, hopefully, some touring. It's sad that they lost a friend and band mate and I wish these guys all the best.
