Godsleep: Thousand Sons of Sleep

The promo materials for this album ask me to "imagine Phil Anselmo singing for Clutch." As a pitch to potential listeners, the offer doesn't sound too bad, but I don't think this band exactly fits what it's trying to say. Sure, the tag is mostly hype and there are moments here that make it true. As the materials go on to tell us, this band is mostly made up of 70s psychedelia and doom metal. Some of the other bands one could mention as influences are Crowbar and Down, maybe even Orange Goblin. I don't think this band has quite reached such heights in terms of sound of songwriting, but they sound like they've been honing their craft for a long time and the results are strong. It's a compliment to call a debut album mature and this album is mature in most of the right ways.

I was especially impressed with the way the music and the vocals know just when to swell and when to back off. I can easily imagine some of these songs shaking the rafters of a small club and getting fans moving their heads with the rhythm. Although the album is very impressive, the tracks are sometimes too long and the vocals are sometimes too emotive. Metal like this can be very expressive, but I sometimes wanted to hear more of the band's overall sludge / doom power than more vocals. Some of the tracks are a little too pleading in the vocals, especially when the topic turns to relationships.
