2014's Into the Open was a solid debut for the trio calling themselves 21 Octayne, and now their sophomore album for AFM Records is out, and titled 2.0. Comprised of vocalist Hagen Grohe (The Joe Perry Project), guitarist Marco Wriedt (ex-Axxis) and drummer Alex Landenburg (Rhapsody), 21 Octayne fire off 10 melodic hard rock tunes here that are pretty catchy yet have enough muscle to appeal to any fan of hook laden, heavy music. "Devil in Disguise" and "Take Me Back" both offer up tasty guitar riffs and Grohe's soaring vocals, while "When You Go" is an emotional ballad with a more rootsy feel that might appeal to any modern pop/country fan. "Love's Just a Heartbreak Away" is an alluring power ballad with a can't miss chorus, while "Take Me Away" ups the ante with some thunderous grooves and searing, metallic guitar work courtesy of Wriedt. Other highlights include the memorable hard rocker "The Circle", with its crisp guitar riffs, and the irresistible "Fly With Me", a massive melodic metal track with snarling vocals from Grohe, heavy guitar riffs, and hooks galore. Of course, 21 Octayne have to close out the album with an epic in the form of the 10-minute "Tale of a Broken Child", a tune filled with soaring vocals and plenty of sizzling guitar work.
21 Octayne aren't necessarily a household name, but they are without a doubt a band worthy of your attention. If you adore catchy hooks, crunchy guitar riffs, memorable songs, and oh yes, powerful vocals, there's plenty of all that and more here.
