Lomax, Jackie: Rare, Unreleased and Live 1965-1975

British musician and singer-songwriter Jackie Lomax worked with most of the Beatles and was the first solo artist signed to Apple Records. He was a member of the Merseybeat band The Undertakers, played with original Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye in Badger, and also worked with Eric Clapton, Leon Russell and Jeff Beck. But over the years, Lomax has somehow been overlooked in the pantheon of British artists. Suffice to say that, while the man's musical history is complicated, his recordings deserve revisiting. And that's exactly what this exhaustive two-CD, 38-song set intends to do, gathering unreleased songs, rare cuts and live performances spanning almost 50 years to provide a fuller, more vivid musical snapshot of Lomax's contributions to rock and pop. Indeed, the album's compiler, producer and liner notes writer Alistair Hepburn states that this two-and-a-half-hour-plus collection "will fill in any gaps in his already released material."

If you're a fan, you know you want this; if you're new to Lomax (as was this writer), Rare, Unreleased and Live 1965-1975 will serve as an educational and entertaining introduction. Some of the best tracks here include the rare Undertakers cut "Throw Your Love Away" and "You Better Get Going Now" by The Lomax Alliance, which was managed by Beatles' manager Brian Epstein shortly before Epstein's death. There's also a German version of "How the West Was Won," which seems out of place but will no doubt please longtime fans.

Maybe part of the reason Lomax, who died in 2013, remained a mystery to some is because he never committed to one musical style. This enjoyable compilation proves that, while also encouraging interested listeners to pursue some of his other work.
