Sinatras: Six Sexy Songs

Hoping to snag some attention – and a record deal along the way – Italy's Sinatras fire Six Sexy Songs at us as way of introduction to their Southern groove metal. The Sinatras leader, Emanuele Zilio, or as he's known here, Lele Sinatra, is a face known from Strange Corner, a band with comparisons to Carcass, Entombed, Pantera and Hatebreed, much of which could also be pointed at this outfit. However Sinatras are more about the groove than the extreme and with that in mind, "Frank Is Back" jousts and jostles with conviction, while "Sunshine" adds a pummel of pounding.

Vocalist Fla Sinatra may prove to be an acquired taste, his throatier excursions pretty much on the aggressively hammered nail, although his clean forays prove a little more inconsistent. In ways his approach feels as though the frontman of a snot nosed punk band has been pulled into the world of big riffs and bass drum abuse, his sneering scattergun approach a little at odds with what it fronts. Unusually, the stars of the show often show up in the form of bassist Lispio Sinatra and drummer Jenny B (who is actually a bloke judging from the booklet picture), the pairing a tumultuous barrage of powering fury that drives with a real intent. That said, Lele and Minkio aren't exactly six string slouches, the riff quota quickly met and exceeded by the pair, as "W.A.F.S." and "All Or Nothing" base themselves round varied, insistent guitar attacks.

The rock and metal scene in Italy appears to bustling and busy right now, new bands coming to the fore month on month. However like much of the output from that country (much though it is varied), if there's one complaint here, then it's the lack willingness to attempt to bring anything new to the party. However for an independent demo, Six Sexy Songs sure isn't shy on making itself known and the confidence and substance on show is undoubtedly impressive.
