Cyahares: Whores Of Babylon

Cyahares is the brainchild of Finnish musician Mir Shamal Hama-faraj. The new album is titled Whores Of Babylon and Mir Shamal plays all instruments as well as vocals. The album contains eight tracks of melodic death metal although there are some mellower moments sprinkled within giving the album nice dynamics and some cleaner sounds.

It was hard finding information about this artist so I am not sure how many albums are out there but what I can tell you is this latest offering is pretty darn good. The riffs are thick and heavy as are the pummeling drums and the intense growling vocals.

The somewhat awkwardly titled first track "The Winds In Coordinations Of My Sand Statues" is a nice beginning with its very heavy instrumentation but also having some gothic elements buried in the mix. Many of these songs carry hints of the Middle East especially the exotically tinged "Temples Of Fire" where lighter moments segue into heavy death metal and the interesting instrumental "Temples Of Waters", featuring beautiful acoustic guitar and a more introspective approach. Incidentally, this tune is not listed in the CD packaging. "The Anunnaki" is another fine track combining clean guitar parts with hellishly heavy riffs and growls.

Whores Of Babylon is a strong death metal release and is easily recommended for fans of the genre.
