Burntfield: Cold Heat
Hailing form Helsinki, Finland, Burntfield is a melodic rock band that has a fair amount of promise as their take on the genre is quite different than many of the bands I have heard recently. Maybe it's because I am used to a certain power metal sound from that country, I found this to be a pretty interesting listen.
The band formed in 2012 and released their debut EP Organic Waves in 2013. Their second EP Cold Heat was released in August of this year and contains four tracks and approximately twenty-three minutes of music.
Band members Juho Myllylä (guitars, vocals), Valtteri Seppänen (guitars, vocals), Tero Heinonen (bass, vocals) and Riku Vääriskoski (drums, percussion) along with guest musician Arttu Vauhkonen (keyboards) are certainly talented players. Thick guitar riffs and bluesy hard rock vocals begin the first track "Deal With It". A tasty guitar groove and nice vocal harmonies are the song's main focus. "Q & A" starts quieter with a cool multipart vocal arrangement leading to fading out guitar riffs and trippy psychedelic soloing. In the melodic "Under The Dome" the lower register lead vocals carry a thick accent which may be off putting for some but the harmonizing backing vocals during the chorus are excellent. The flute sounding keyboards is another nice touch. On "How Lucky" the lead vocals are much more melodic and easy to listen to. Gentle strums of guitar and vocals set the relaxing pace of the piece along with Beatle-like backing vocals eventually leading into some emotive guitar soloing. I really dig how the band emphasize the vocal arrangements giving these songs an added lushness.
Burntfield are an up and coming young band who I hope stay together to make a full length album. I can certainly see them making waves in the future.
