Devation: Scorn Through an Absent Scene

Ahhh, the Melodic Death Metal that the Swedes have made famous! Soilwork, In Flames, At The Gates bands like this have created an art form within modern Metal and now another Swedish band from Gothenburg, Devation, have emerged as newcomers to the fray.

Scorn Through an Absent Scene (Shunu Records) is Devation's debut disc and it contains 10 bluntly heavy and melodic tunes that will find it's way into fans of the a fore mentioned Swedish Metal legends. Focusing on darker tones balanced with melody gives each song its own unique theme and voice. Tracks like "Cancer", "Void" and album closer "The Fixation" show the varied depth in the bands material. Brutal powerful riffing coupled with all the bombastic speed that you would expect from the Gothenburg sound that is paced nicely with uses of Acoustic guitar, sparingly used clean vocals and harsh growled vocals that are still clear enough to understand.

The production of Scorn Through an Absent Scene is very good and was mixed and mastered by Arnold Lindberg (In Flames, Marduk, Dimmu Borgir, Evergrey). Guitars are precisely what you would want from a Melodic Death Metal band; heavy, piercing and vicious which makes the other elements of the music dynamic.

Devation have a strong debut with Scorn Through an Absent Scene and Swedish Metal/Melodic Death Metal fans will find it familiar and new at the same time. It has all of the elements required but it doesn't break any new Metal ground either. If you are into this type of Metal you will enjoy it as it sounds much like the bands that you have grown to love.
