Hammercult: Built for War

This album has at least three songs that will play well with audiences: "Rise of the Hammer," "I Live for this Shit," and "Saturday Night Circle Pit Fight." On their own, any one of them would whip an audience into a frenzy, but together they solidify Hammercult's reputation as a powerful thrash act. Better still, these songs aren't the only good ones on this album. Just listen to "Blackened Blade," "Ready to Roll," or "Road to Hell." Like the creature on the album cover, this band is poised for battle and will not back down for anyone or anything. For readers familiar with Steelcrusher, the band's last album, this release is just as passionate, just as fast, and just as heavy. There are some signs of expansion—forays into melody and some more vocal diversity—but there is no loss of intensity or authenticity. Simply put, Hammercult creates excellent thrash that understands exactly when to be melodic, when to mosh, and when to pump fists. As for the vocals, I normally don't enjoy music that relies too much on a regular mix of clean and dirty vocals; in the case of Built for War, however, however, I make an exception. The vocals do alternate here and there but they avoid the tendency to make the dirty sound bad and the clean sound ridiculous. Best of all, this band never sacrifices intensity, speed, or a willingness to jump into the fray. This is an excellent new release from a talented and powerful thrash band. Turn it up and get ready for battle!
