Razor: Violent Restitution (Reissue)
Someone once told me that the secret to the thrash vocal style is rage. Any given performance of this music depends, to some extent, on the singer being angry. Such anger need not be about daily annoyances, like being stuck in traffic or waiting for a long time at McDonald's. Instead, the feelings of anger must be deep and hard to shake, as though life itself makes you angry.
Razor plays music steeped in deep levels of anger. Obviously, the music here is classic thrash, the kind that knows the importance both of speed and of punk's influence. Much of the album revels not only in speed but the sheer abandon of pushing things forward, almost to the point when structure and sense are lost. This is thrash done right.
This album opens with the blistering track "The Marshall Arts," an anthem to amplified loudness and relentless speed. Things keep going strong all the way until "Soldier of Fortune." Although the production isn't as good as on Open Hostility, there are only reasons to enjoy the raw passion of a band playing this kind of music. Check out "Hypertension," "Discipline," and "Edge of the Razor" for some of the better tracks. Even better, just sit back and enjoy the whole album.
The bonus tracks on this reissue are limited to three live tracks. I liked the offerings on Open Hostility better, but these will do.
