Deep Purple: ...To The Rising Sun (In Tokyo)

Captured on the Now What tour this performance finds Deep Purple back in Japan and has been issued as a three disc set of 2 CD's and a single DVD or Blu-Ray that captures the entire show which was filmed with 12 HD cameras. With a venue so steeped in Purple's history you might think this was all about nostalgia but as the Now What album proved the creative juices are very much still flowing and what we have here is a set list that spans the legendary bands entire career with a decent selection of newer songs to sit alongside the classics.

'Apres Vous' makes for a fairly laid back, jazzy, start to proceedings but Ian Gillan is soon belting out a gutsy 'Into the Fire' and both band and audience are rocking out to 'Strange Kind of Woman'. After the haunting yet playful 'Vincent Price' it is time for Steve Morse to take over for 'Contact Lost', 'Uncommon Man' and 'The Well Dressed Guitar'. Morse has been in the band now getting on for more than twenty years and has more than played his part in both preserving the bands legacy and ensuring their longevity. Putting his own twist on the likes of 'Smoke on the Water' and 'Lazy' may not go down well with the purists but is further proof the band are not just looking backwards. 'Above and Beyond' offers a touching tribute to the late Jon Lord and his replacement Don Airey takes his own solo slot that leads into 'Perfect Strangers', undoubtedly the genuine highlight of their 80's output. 'Space Truckin' may be a lot shorter these days as opposed to back in the 70's when it would extend to 30-odd minutes but it still offers the opportunity for Morse and Airey to jam along with the veteran rhythm section of Roger Glover and Ian Paice. 'Smoke..', 'Hush' (preceded by a dose of 'Green Onions') and an extended 'Black Night' bring the show to a close in typical Purple style.

We are now a mere three years away from Deep Purple's 50th anniversary – bring it on!!
