Ommadon: Empathy for the Wicked

I've had this album on at work all week. I keep it mostly turned down low, but I find that I can conduct quite a bit of business with a little bit of drone / doom playing in the background. I've also listened to the album outside of work, turned up much louder, my attention focused on the sound.

Though this album draws on the logic of vinyl by splitting the music into a "side A" and a "side B," the release is supposed to be only one track with a minor interruption. The coolest thing is that the whole thing was recorded live at an industrial estate. The results are amazing. The production brings out the low end without sounding too muddy and the drums, especially the cymbals, sound terrific. This band, always something of a critical darling, continues to demonstrate that they deserve the attention. Better still, the music is consistently strong and interesting. The hardest thing about this release is that it's hard to say where it begins and where it ends. Sure, there are obvious indicators, but my point is that the drone style of the music simple draws listeners into the sound as though it were always there, lurking in the background. The band just helps us tune our attention to it and invites us to sit back, band our heads a little, and enjoy.

I generally like drone music and Ommadon is certainly one of the bands in this genre making a strong impression. Check it out.
