José Gurria's Gurrisonic Orchestra: Three Kids Music

Here is an album for all you experimental jazz lovers out there; Three Kids Music by the Gurrisonic Orchestra.

The heart of this twenty-two piece ensemble is Los Angeles based drummer José Gurria, a highly educated musician who specializes in a more improvised setting.

This is one of those albums that reveals itself upon closer inspection and despite the improvisation and sporadic nature of the music there are some accessible moments, most notably the pretty title track where serene vocalizations and a solitary bass line develop slowly and as the piano enters there is a sense of longing nostalgia, perfect for nighttime listening. In direct contrast is the beginning track "Constant Deprivation of Monetary Funds (The Beast)", an almost ten minute ride where up-tempo rhythmic patterns provide cacophonic builds and intense musical passages. Various instruments take the lead, most notably violin, and as blasts of trumpet and saxophone lines twist and turn through the soundscape one realizes these players are the real deal. On "Ishuakara" the beginning chamber segment is as complex as anything on the disc but soon develops into something quite catchy with fabulous saxophone and brass. All the while there is a frenetic complexity that is at the core of this piece with the SWR Big Band putting its stamp on the ending with a tumultuous burst of sounds.

Another subdued track is "The Finger" with an underlying sadness that the multiple piano lines exude throughout the song's nine minutes.

The CD booklet contains a wealth of information including an introductory essay on the project, detailed liner notes on individual tracks and full credit list of all the musicians involved. It is all very professional and really a great looking digipack.

For complex avant-garde jazz look no further that the Gurrisonic Orchestra. The best part is there are moments of accessibility when the madness stops allowing the musicians and the listener to breathe until the next mind blowing excursion. Released on Quindecim Recordings.
