SardoniS: III

There's a duo in Salt Lake City called Cornered by Zombies. The guitarist and the drummer pound out instrumental tracks that require not only great skill but also plenty of energy. There are no vocals, only extended and exciting jams.

Like Cornered by Zombies, SardoniS is a skilled and energetic duo that plays endlessly interesting instrumentals. The secret to a band like this is to keep things fresh by attacking the music with as much fierceness and aggression as possible. There's always the risk that audiences will quickly get used to this kind of attack, but they will likely be impressed by the constant and fresh attack of the music. SardoniS works against this formula by straying into long stretches of doom metal, relying on the power of the slow riff and the patient beat to keep things moving. There's plenty of power and energy in some of the songs, but I thought it was cool to see these guys trying out different approaches to keeping a duo going. I thought I might miss hearing vocals now and then, but the music was consistently strong. Check out "The Coming of Khan," "Battering Ram," "Ruined Decay," and the long closing track "Forward to the Abyss," especially when the latter picks up steam. It's a headlong flight into the abyss!
