Elephant Riders: Supernova / Challenger
I've always been fond of stoner rock, especially the kind that's big and beefy, full of groove and fuelled by riffs. With this album, Elephant Riders gives listeners plenty of swaggering, heavy, rock that lives up to giant ambitions of the band's name. These guys aren't quite as heavy as an army of Orcs riding on mammoths, but they get close. As the split album title suggests, this release not only includes the latest album, but also a new maxi-single featuring "Challenger" and "Lone Wolf." I think it's only available as a digital set, but there may be hard copies out there somewhere. The music is consistently strong, though it is occasionally subject to sameness. There are also times when things slow down and get bogged down. Nevertheless, there's quite a bit of music to enjoy here, especially when these guys get lost in the groove. Fans of Kyuss and Monster Magnet will especially find things to enjoy.
