Baltazanis: End of Seas

Author/teacher/composer/jazz guitarist Costas Baltazanis has built up an impressive resume in his home country Greece, so it should come as no surprise his new album End of Seas is really very good. He also has an excellent band of New York musicians including Dan Brantigan (trumpet), Isamu McGregor (keyboards, piano), Panagiotis Andreou (bass) and Engin Gunaydin (drums). Also included are a number of guests adding their individual expertise on a number of tacks.

The first track "After the Fight" almost has a serene eeriness about it with gentle trumpet accents and crisp guitar work. It is both melodic and slightly discordant at times as the ensemble switches gears effortlessly across the ever changing soundscape. "The Other Day" starts at a slow tempo with slowly drifting piano and guitar and as the pace quickens the music becomes busier and a little more intense. The trumpet solo from Brantigan is exceptional. "Berlin Sky" is an adventurous piece with an almost rock vibe at times as the guitar is more pronounced. Melodic trumpet and a riveting sax solo bring back the jazz in a big way and the drums of either Gunaydin or guest artist Justin Tyson are superb. Guitar and trumpet solos highlight the calming "End of Seas" while the funky bass line in the World/jazz of "Nairobi Kiss" is another highlight as is Baltazanis' slightly angular lead work. McGregor's piano playing is also something to behold. One of the best tracks is "Harlem West" as Baltaznis adds some psychedelic flavourings to his mind expanding jazz template.

End of Seas is an excellent modern jazz album that should appeal to a broad range of music fans as one cannot help but be impressed by such wonderful musicians. Highly recommended.
